Gift Box from My Mom: Two Books and a Movie

Gifts from my mom!

A few weeks ago my mom sent us a box of gifts, mostly some clothes, toys, and books for my 2 1/2 year old son. However, she also included a few items for me: two beautiful skeins of purple yarn, a fun panda-shaped cleaning cloth for my phone, and -- very excitingly -- two Trixie Belden books and a DVD of the latest Nancy Drew movie.

The two Trixie Belden books are stunning -- they are "Deluxe Edition" books and are in wonderful condition. I already had a copy of "Mystery of the Blinking Eye", but it was the Golden Press version. The new book is the Whitman version. I actually ordered these two books off of US ebay, and my mom was kind enough to ship them to me here in Australia. My mom found the DVD for a dollar at a charity shop -- she's always on the lookout for items for me at those shops.

I really should complete my collection of the Deluxe Edition books -- they are very beautiful books!

The movie will be fun to watch. I saw the movie on a small airplane screen several months ago. It will be nice to watch it again on a proper screen... and we do need some movies to watch now that we're spending most of our time at home due to the pandemic.

First Connie Blair Books

My first two Connie Blair books. I received my first Connie Blair books in the mail this past week. This book series in hard to find here in Australia, but I did manage to find copies of the three books that were published in paperback in the late 1970s. Two of those books arrived this week, and a third book is on its way from the seller. The books are not in great condition, but nevertheless I like these little books. I'll take them to read during some upcoming work travel. I will try to track down copies of the hardcover books, and possibly also the paperback books that were published in the 1960s. I did order two hardcover books that were fairly inexpensive (including international shipping) to start my Connie Blair collection properly, but they will take a few weeks to arrive. Three Flashlight Nancy Drew Books

Three new flashlight edition Nancy Drew books that I ordered recently. The backs of the books. I know that some collectors dislike the books, but I really like the yellow "flashlight edition" Nancy Drew books that were published in the 1990s. I think these are great editions to read. They are sturdy, and since they aren't worth too much I don't worry overly about damaging the books when reading them. Some people think the design of these books is somewhat ugly, but I quite like it. Most importantly, I think, these editions evoke a strong nostalgia for me: these are the Nancy Drew books that I grew up reading, since I was a child / young teenager in the 1990s. I remember seeing these books new in bookstores. As a treat, my mom would sometimes buy one for me. Dana Girls Mystery Books: Sparrow Books Softcover Editions

My collection of softcover Dana Girls mystery books. I really enjoy the Dana Girls mystery books. As a child, I collected hardcover editions that I found in used bookshops in the United States. I noticed that the newer books, published in the 1970s, had white covers and also a different numbering system. More on Dana Girls formats can be found here . In total, seventeen books were published in the white 1970s hardcover format. One interesting thing to note is that some titles changed slightly between the older set of books and the newer 1970s versions. "The Mystery of the Stone Tiger" became "Mystery of the Stone Tiger".  Also, "The Mystery of the Bamboo Bird" became "Mystery of the Bamboo Bird". What I didn't realize when I was growing up in America is that the seventeen Dana Girls books that were published in the 1970s were also published as softcover editions in the 1980s.
